According to the CEO of NASDAQ, Adena Friedman, the exchange is considering becoming a cryptocurrency exchange once the space of digital assets matures.

The CEO stated, “Certainly Nasdaq would consider becoming a crypto exchange over time.” 

Regulation is Key

A key factor for the Nasdaq and other institutional investors is regulation.

Although Friedman seemed bullish about the future of digital currency, she said that regulation is what needs to be determined before the company would release a cryptocurrency exchange.

NASDAQ CEO Believes That Digital Currency Will Continue To Persist

Although Friedman seemed bullish about the future of digital currency, she said that regulation is what needs to be determined before the company would release a cryptocurrency exchange.

She also mentioned she believes that digital currencies will continue to persist and that it’s just a matter of how long it will take for that space to mature,” Friedman said. “Once you look at it and say, ‘do we want to provide a regulated market for this?’ Certainly Nasdaq would consider it.”

In the meantime, the Nasdaq is supporting existing cryptoexchanges.

NASDAQ & Gemini Collaboration

On Wednesday, NASDAQ announced a collaboration with cryptocurrency exchange Gemini. Gemini was founded by early bitcoin investors Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. The deal gives Gemini access to Nasdaq’s surveillance technology to help make sure the platform provides a fair and “rules-based marketplace,” for their own participants, Gemini CEO Tyler Winklevoss said in a statement.
